April 11, 2011 |  | With innovative technology for the production of solar EVA film KraussMaffei Berstorff serves the needs of customers around the globe. A unique high-performance machine combination composed of a co-rotating twin-screw extruder and a flexible PlanetCalander® smoothing unit has recently been ordered by a Chinese film manufacturer. The line will be used for the production of high-quality low-shrinkage EVA film that is embossed on both sides and applied to photovoltaic modules.
Perfect compliance with market requirements and highly efficient material compounding "Our flat sheet lines meet virtually all market requirements in the field of EVA film," declares Dieter Ernst, sales manager for film and sheet lines at Hannover-based KraussMaffei Berstorff. In the production of EVA film for solar modules, plastics processors attach prior importance to cost-effectiveness and quality. The film used to cover the highly sensitive silica slices and all electrical connections between the individual cells must exhibit precise embossing and extremely low shrinkage. In addition, excellent adhesion, long service life and outstanding optical features are indispensable to ensure high efficiency of the photovoltaic modules. "The modular co-rotating twin-screw extruders of the ZE series, which can be perfectly adapted to given process applications are the key to high film quality. As the raw material is directly processed into the finished film without requiring repeated heating and cooling of the polymer, extremely gentle material treatment is ensured, which provides an additional plus in terms of film quality", explains Ernst. The flat sheet lines are designed for output rates of over 1,000 kg/h and film widths of up to 2,000 mm.
PlanetCalander® – cooling and embossing in a single cycle Another highlight of the new line is the flexible planet calender with its unique adjustment mechanism that also contributes to the excellent film quality. As the first and the third roll can be adjusted relative to the second roll, the cooling conditions can be perfectly adapted to the material-specific cooling behavior. At the same time, the rolls ensure constant and precisely reproducible embossing on both film sides. The downstream temperature control unit compensates the shrinkage stress generated by the extrusion process.
Development of customized recipes Thanks to longstanding experience in machine engineering and versatile testing equipment in the process laboratory, KraussMaffei Berstorff is in a position to test and optimize the ideal production process for customer-specific film recipes. The process laboratory offers a wide range of testing facilities for the production of plastics film and sheets.
